Following a difficult month of April, due to tariff induced panic, the S&P500 recovered nicely in May, surging 6.15%. This was the best performance for US stocks in the month of May since May 1990. Canadian stocks as measured by the S&P TSX rebounded nicely in May as well, rising 5.37% during the month. Equity markets in Europe and Asia were broadly positive as well, rising low single digits throughout the month. No one knows what trade deals may or may not be announced over the course of the next 90 days. I don’t think the Trump administration really knows at this point either. The tariff pause has raised hopes for a path to negotiated resolutions and shows that the Trump administration is paying attention to credit and equity markets. So, what should you do next? The answer to this depends on your risk tolerance and your financial situation, but selling everything and going to cash to try and time the market is never the correct answer. Holding a diversified portfolio of both stocks and bonds is usually a good place to start if you are nervous about the stock market.
