Equity markets were a bit choppy in the month of April. US stocks as gauged by the S&P 500 were down 3.97%. Canadian stocks, as reflected by the S&P TSX index were off 2.12% in May, and the EAFE region (Developed Europe and Asia-Pacific) was also down a little over 3%. Despite a pull-back for equity markets in April, short-term performance over the past 3- and 6-months periods has still been quite positive.

February continued to be positive for stock markets globally. US stocks as measured by the S&P500 led the way, posting a 5.20% return in the month. Canadian stocks as measured by the S&P TSX were up 1.6% and the Euro-Asia Pacific Region as measured by the MSCI EAFE was up 3.80%. Interest rates continue to be a hot topic and though we are beginning to see some Emerging markets cut rates, the expectation is that the FED and BoC will move much more cautiously. The BoC’s next rate decision meeting is March 6 while the FED’s is March 20th.

For investors, Santa Claus delivered this holiday season as markets displayed solid performance in December. – US stocks as measured by the S&P 500 were up 4.4% in December. – Canadian stocks as measured by the S&P TSX were up 3.6% in December. – The bond market also had a strong month, as the FTSE Canada Bond Universe Index was up 3.4% in December. The positive performance for both stocks and bonds in December was largely a response to broad expectations of interest rate cuts by central banks in 2024.
